Privacy & Cookies
This page explains what FindMyPart collects, why, and what your rights are. It's written in plain English. If anything's unclear, email jack@findmypart.co.uk.
Who runs this site
FindMyPart is operated by Jack (an individual sole trader based in the United Kingdom). For the purposes of UK GDPR, Jack is the data controller for the personal data described below.
Contact: jack@findmypart.co.uk
What we collect
1. Vehicle registration numbers (VRMs)
When you enter a UK number plate to search for parts, we send it to a third-party DVLA data provider (VehicleDataGlobal) to look up basic vehicle details — make, model, year, engine size, body type. We cache the result on our server for up to 30 days so repeat searches don't re-query the DVLA. We do not link the VRM to your identity, IP address, or analytics profile. We do not share it with anyone except the DVLA data provider.
2. Part search queries
The part name you type (e.g. "wing mirror") is sent to eBay's API to find matching listings. This isn't linked to you personally either.
3. Analytics data
We use PostHog (EU-hosted) to understand how the site is used. This includes:
- Pages you visit and how long you spend
- Buttons / links you click
- Searches you run (the part name, but not the VRM)
- Whether you clicked through to a listing
- Anonymised technical info: browser type, screen size, country (derived from IP), referring site
- JavaScript errors that occur on the site, so we can fix bugs
This data is stored in the EU and not sold to anyone. You can opt out at any time — see Cookies below.
Why we collect it (lawful basis)
- Vehicle & part lookups — necessary to provide the service you've asked for (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(b), performance of a contract).
- Analytics — our legitimate interest (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(f)) in understanding and improving the site. You can opt out.
Who we share data with
- VehicleDataGlobal (UKVD) — receives the VRM to perform the DVLA lookup. Their privacy policy.
- eBay — receives your search query and your vehicle details (make/model/year) to find listings. We also use eBay's affiliate programme (EPN) — see "Affiliate disclosure" below. eBay UK privacy notice.
- PostHog (EU) — receives the analytics events described above. PostHog privacy.
- Fly.io — hosts the server. Server logs containing IP addresses are kept short-term for security/debugging. Fly.io privacy.
We do not sell your data to advertisers, brokers, or anyone else.
Cookies
FindMyPart uses a small number of cookies:
- Strictly necessary — none currently set by us beyond what your browser requires.
- Analytics — PostHog sets a cookie to recognise repeat visitors. This is what you see in the consent banner. If you reject, we instruct PostHog to stop collecting data from your browser.
You can change your choice at any time by clearing your cookies and reloading the site — the banner will reappear.
Affiliate disclosure
When you click through to an eBay listing from FindMyPart, the link includes an eBay Partner Network (EPN) affiliate tag. If you make a purchase, eBay pays us a small commission. This does not change the price you pay. FindMyPart does not influence which listings rank highest — the cheapest and most relevant listings are shown based on eBay's search results, regardless of commission.
How long we keep data
- VRM cache: 30 days, then deleted automatically.
- Analytics: PostHog's default retention applies (currently 1 year for events).
- Server logs: rotated within days.
Your rights under UK GDPR
You have the right to:
- Ask what data we hold about you
- Ask us to correct or delete it
- Ask us to stop processing it
- Lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO)
To make any of these requests, email jack@findmypart.co.uk. We'll respond within one month.
Children
FindMyPart isn't aimed at children under 16 and we don't knowingly collect data from them.
Changes to this policy
If we change anything material, we'll update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Significant changes will be flagged on the homepage.
